The GM W-Body platform has been home to a diverse range of cars—from practical daily drivers to spirited performance machines. With multiple brands and generations to choose from, each W-Body offers its own unique blend of features.

Engine Options & Trim Levels

• V6 Powertrains: Many models featured variations of the popular 3.1L, 3.4L, or 3.8L (including supercharged options) for a balanced mix of power and efficiency.
• High-Performance Variants: Trims like the GS, GTP, and SS introduced either forced induction or additional tuning to deliver more punch under the hood.
• Special Editions: Some W-Body models offered unique styling cues, limited-run paint colors, or upscale interior packages that set them apart from standard trims.
• Later Upgrades: In certain years, GM introduced V8-powered versions (e.g., GXP trims) for drivers seeking an even stronger performance profile.

Discussion Starters

1. Model Preference: Which W-Body car do you consider the best overall, and what features or characteristics make it stand out?
2. Engine Favorites: Do you prefer the tried-and-true naturally aspirated 3.8L, the supercharged variants, or one of the lesser-known powerplants?
3. Top Trim or Special Edition: Which special trim level or limited edition caught your eye, and why do you think it deserves more attention?
4. Ownership Insights: If you’ve owned—or currently own—a W-Body, what aspects do you appreciate most (or least) about driving and maintaining it?
5. Modification and Restoration: Have you seen any impressive W-Body builds or resto projects? Feel free to share stories, photos, or links that show these vehicles in all their modified glory.

Let’s hear your take on the ultimate W-Body model!

While i still have yet to own one, my favorite(s) have to be:
88-96 grand prix
00-05 monte carlo

For a hypothetical build of these cars, theres too much that id want to do with not enough money to ever make it happen. but to keep it simple, id like to do a cammed and stroked ls4 with a 5 or 6 spd manual trans, 18” rims, 4 piston brembos all the way around.

What do you think?

I love most of the wbody lineup with the exception of a few. The GXP project is cool and I think you should do it or maybe the Chevy or Buick with the 5.3.

A dream build of mine would be stuffing an LFX/6T70 into a 95 Cutty Convertible. A close 2nd would be L67 swapping a 96 Regal GS. I like the character of the 1st Gens, but HATE the door-mounted passive restraints. Those 2 models are free of the shitty door-mounted belts.

What I like the most about the W platform (at least the 2G & 3G models) is the absolute ubiquity of the available parts for them. Parts are cheap and plentiful, and the cars are flat-out simple to work on. You want performance upgrades? They have those in spades as well!

I've always been a Chevy fan, and have owned three W-body cars. The first was a 2000 Impala base, the second was a 96 or 97 Lumina, and I currently own a 2005 Impala LS. The first two were before I really started working on my cars and looking at modifications and upgrades. I've owned my 05 for 13 years now, and have 250k miles on it. Currently doing some overdue maintenance repairs, and upgrading some suspension and brakes. Ever since I laid eyes on the 2000-05 Impala models, I've been a fan. I love the lines and distinct look of the car. The factory handling and performance of even the base model is great. I'm a family man, so the 4-door vehicle works great for me.

Since owning the 3800 NA engine, I'm sold and hooked. I've even thought it would be a great engine to fit into some of the smaller classic cars for a restomod project. It provides plenty of power for the platform, is reliable, something that isn't usually too hard to work on (don't talk to me right now about oil pan gasket replacement though), and doesn't require premium gas like the supercharged version!

Interior-wise, the of the 00-05 LS just looks sharp. I'm sure the 06-16 versions are great to drive, but even on the high-end LTZ version, it all just seems plain and boring to me.
