Application: Because GM used this pattern for decades across multiple brands, you have a massive list of potential engines that will bolt up to the F40 transmission.

Direct Bolt-On Engines (60° V6 Pattern)

These engines share the exact same mounting flange. Note that while they bolt up, you may still need to account for flywheel/clutch spacing and starter location.

High Value V6 (Pushrod)

  • 3.9L (LZ9): The original engine.
  • 3.5L (LX9, LZ4, LZE): Found in G6, Malibu, and Impala.
  • 3.4L (LA1): Found in Grand Am, Alero, and various minivans.
  • 3.1L (L82, LG8): Found in Lumina, Malibu, and Grand Prix.
  • 2.8L (L98): The original 60-degree V6 from the 1980s (Celebrity, Citation).

3800 Series II & III V6 (90° V6)

  • 3.8L (L36): Naturally aspirated.
  • 3.8L (L67 / L32): Supercharged (GTP, Regal GS, Bonneville SSEi).

High Feature V6 (DOHC)

  • 3.6L (LY7 / LLT): Used in the G6 GXP and early Camaros/Cadillacs.
  • 2.8L (LP1): Turbo version found in Saab 9-3 Aeros (which also used the F40).

The "Oddballs" & V8s

  • 5.3L LS4 V8: The only LS-series V8 with this pattern (Found in Impala SS, Monte Carlo SS, Grand Prix GXP). Note: The F40 requires housing clearancing for the LS4 starter.
  • 3.5L LX5 "Shortstar": The DOHC V6 version of the Northstar V8 (Found in Olds Intrigue).
  • 2.2L Ecotec (L61): Some early versions used this pattern, but most use the Ecotec-specific pattern.
  • 2.5L "Iron Duke" I4: Found in S10s and Fieros.
