Backstory

Currently rebuilding my 2002 Monte with the originally L36 3800. It now has L67 piston and rods, series 3 intake, 62mm turbo, 60# Injectors, 4” intercooler, ZZP front and rear turbo headers, 90# springs and car is currently stripped down to 3k lbs. I’m keeping the stock cam and I’ve ran 12.7’s before I broke some of the pistons.

Question

Is there any way to eliminate some of the harness and the car could run? I’m also looking for a schematic for an option to run LS coils instead of the coil packs.

Thanks

Unfortunately, the only items you can safely remove are the evap and egr; you need the rest of that harness. I was working on creating a harness to use other style coil packs, but life got in the way. The stock coils are perfect; you will run into issues when using ZZP, MSD, and Accel. I have a video on how to get the most out of the stock coils. ***
I had seen something a while back were someone had messed with the wiring and made it so we could eliminate the coil packs. That’s why I was asking. If I get ahold of the schematic I’ll post it.

It’s been a while since I’ve posted. What you may be referring to is the post I made quite awhile back. I did not eliminate the wiring or the coil packs. I divorced the coil pack housing from its close proximity to the cylinder head. This created a substantial decrease in the overall coil pack temperature. Heat is the number one enemy of electrical power. For every ten degrees C in heat there is a substantial decline in spark intensity.

Ah I see. What I’m referring to is doing a coil swap to a ls style coil. Something a lot more controlled. So I can setup a 2step

Ok, but I would agree with Robert. The OEM packs are very good! Just as good as the LS packs. High voltage is high voltage, but in the new, now old world of ecms & all the sensor technology interface counts just as much as voltage numbers! And the OEM packs when working correctly produce more than enough spark intensity. To make sure you optimize that you need to reduce the coil pack temperature as much as possible & specially below 200F or 95C.

That’s a hard sell! FWD for that kind of equipment has little demand. Trying to adapt something could work, but I would have serious concerns for the motor. Honestly I know you don’t want to hear this, but old school would probably be your best bet! Invest in a real good tack that has the two step marker dial & watch the gage! It’ll take some practice, but if you’re good the results are the same.
