ThinkPad T14 Gen 2 Glass Touchpad Upgrade (Using X1 Extreme Pad)

I upgraded the stock plastic touchpad on my T14 Gen 2 (Intel) with the glass Synaptics touchpad from the X1 Extreme Gen 1. This is a confirmed working swap and makes a huge difference in feel and quality.

🧩 Part Used:

  • Synaptics Glass Touchpad – FRU 01LX660
  • Pulled from: ThinkPad X1 Extreme Gen 1 / P1 Gen 1
  • Also labeled as: Synaptics 8SSM10P36008
  • Same size and connector as the T14 Gen 2—drop-in compatible

🛠️ Tools Needed:

  • Small Phillips screwdriver
  • Plastic pry tool/spudger
  • ESD protection (optional but smart)

🔧 Install Process:

  1. Power off and enter BIOS → disable internal battery.
  2. Remove bottom cover (unscrew and gently pry).
  3. Disconnect and remove the battery.
  4. Locate the touchpad — remove the screws and lift the old one out.
  5. Install the glass pad, reconnect the ribbon cable, and screw it down.
  6. Reassemble the laptop and boot up.
  7. Touchpad works immediately — no drivers or firmware updates needed.

🧠 Notes:

  • This isn’t a haptic pad — it’s mechanical, but the glass surface is way smoother and more precise.
  • No BIOS tweaks or compatibility issues on Gen 2 Intel.
  • The click feel is firmer and less hollow than stock.
  • Less drag, smoother surface.

Feel free to ask if you need help sourcing the part or doing the install. This is a simple mod with a big payoff.
